FREE adult SciFi-Fantasy contest

This is the 26th FREE Dear Lucky Agent online contest with agent judges and super-cool prizes. Here’s the deal: With every contest, the details are essentially the same, but the niche itself changes-meaning each contest is focused around a specific category or two. If you’re writing any kind of fantasy or science fiction novel (for adults), then this 26th contest is for you! The contest is live through end of day, Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016. The contest is judged by agent Mike Hoogland of Dystel & Goderich. (Dystel and Goderich will be repped at the 2017 LV Writers’ Conference.)

Idaho Writers Guild

Idaho Writers Guild announces annual contest.

This year’s categories:
* Short Story (3500 word max)
* Novel first ten pages (adult or new adult novel)
* Non-fiction (2500 word max)
a. Memoir
b. newspaper/magazine article/essay

So, let the writing begin! Entries can be submitted now through the first of March. Final deadline March 5, 2017! But wait…there’s more! Anthology deadline approaching

For members of the HWG who are considering submitting to the annual anthology, the deadline for submissions on Writer’s Bloc 8 is fast approaching. You have until midnight of October 31, 2016. Rules are below:

What to Submit:
Your best one (1) edited work of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or a teaser from your novel
How to Submit:

Formatting Guidelines
No more than 4,000 words
Word document (Word 97-2003 or later, electronic format only)
One (1) inch margins all around
Times New Roman or Courier 12 pt font
Work should include a Header with the Work Title and Page Numbers (may include author’s name)
Cover page with:
Author’s Name
     Title of Work
     Type of work (fiction, nonfiction, poetry, teaser)
     Word count
The cover page can be part of the work’s document or a separate Word document—NOT just in the body of the email.  Do not add the words from the cover to the work’s overall word count.
Submissions not following these guidelines will be returned and can be resubmitted if they meet the deadline.

No entry fee Visual Prompt Contest

The Neon Museum Visual Prompt Contest with Helen Magazine is now on progress.  There’s no entry fee for this one, and the award is $25 and a Neon Museum gift bag with tickets, and a goodie bag provided by The Writer’s Block indie bookstore. Deadline is October 31, 2016; winner will be announced November 15, 2016.

Masters Review

The Masters review announces their Fall Fiction Contest. Accepting submissions until November 15. This one will be judged by Kelly Link.

  • Winner receives $2000, a year’s subscription to Duotrope, and publication
  • Second and third place prizes ($200, $100, and publication)
  • Stories under 7000 words
  • Simultaneous and multiple submissions allowed
  • Emerging writers only (We are interested in offering a larger platform to new writers. Self-published writers and writers with story collections and novels with a small circulation are welcome to submit.)

International Poetry Competition

Deadline 12th September

1st Prize £1000
 A reminder that you have two weeks left to get your entries in for the 2016 Poetry Competition. Previous winners include Andrew McMillan, Tessa Foley, Kirsten Irving, Inua Ellams and Lesley Saunders.
25 shortlisted poems will be published in our 2016 prize anthology, and performed by the Live Canon Ensemble at our prize giving event at Greenwich Theatre on Sunday 20th November 2016. We are absolutely honoured that Lorraine Mariner has agreed to be our guest judge this year.
The overall winner will be announced at the event and receive £1000. There is also a £100 prize for the highest placed entry by a local writer, living working or studying in the London Borough of Greenwich.
There is an entry fee of £6 for a single poem, £15 for three poems and £20 for five poems. This goes towards the cost of running the competition, publishing the anthology and any excess goes to our fundraising campaign for workshops with young people in schools and libraries.

Seeking submissions

Toledo Bend Review is seeking quality nonfiction, fiction, poetry and photography. They accept unsolicited manuscripts from new and emerging authors as well as seasoned professionals – we do not accept simultaneous submissions. They encourage writers to submit manuscripts between 1500-3500 words.  While they are not a paying market at this time, authors receive 2 copies of the publication along with a personalized acceptance letter.  

Photography may accompany submissions (no more than 3 per story) – please provide a brief caption for each photograph submitted. Poetry should be no more than 25 lines on any subject (no more than 5 poems at one submission). They do not accept porn.

PAINTEDSTORIESWriters of Southern Nevada is looking for a local traditional/indie/self published author for it’s next PAINTED STORIES event on Sunday July 31st at the Jewel Box Theater!

The theme this time is Endless Summer so adventure, romance, travel all fits. Read an excerpt from your book and watch your words inspire artists to paint! $50 stipend and opportunity to sign/sell copies of your books afterwards.
