Announcing Creative Writing Scholarship in Conjunction with
The 17th Annual Las Vegas Writers Conference
One scholarship to be awarded as follows:
- $1,000.00 cash to be deposited directly into the first-place student’s college financial aid account.
- An opportunity for the scholarship winner to attend the Las Vegas Writers Conference full-day Saturday workshop session and evening award banquet, to be held on April 4, at the Tuscany Suites and Casino. This professional development opportunity represents an additional scholarship award value of $300.00.*
- Publication of each winner’s creative submission in the Henderson Writers Group anthology, The Writer’s Bloc.
Who is Eligible:
Graduating high school seniors who plan to enroll in a two-year or four-year college or university as a full-time student and who have demonstrated creative writing ability based on the recommendation of a faculty member or advisor.
Submission Requirements (please note the different addresses for the application with creative writing attachment and the Letter or Statement of Recommendation)
- Submit an email application including name, address, telephone number, email address, and name of school to the Henderson Writers Group at this address: education@hendersonwritersgroup.com, together with the following attachment:
- A piece of original creative writing at least 1,500 words in length and not to exceed 2,500 words in one of the following categories: fiction, nonfiction, creative nonfiction, or essay.

- A Letter or Statement of Recommendation, signed and dated, by one faculty member or counselor submitted to the Henderson Writers Group at this address: scholarship@hendersonwritersgroup.com, or via USPS to P.O. Box 92032, Henderson, NV 89009.
- A piece of original creative writing at least 1,500 words in length and not to exceed 2,500 words in one of the following categories: fiction, nonfiction, creative nonfiction, or essay.
*Scholarship award recipients are expected to attend the full-day Saturday workshop session and award banquet of the Henderson Writers Group held on April 4, 2020, at the Tuscany Suites and Casino.
The deadline to submit required Application with creative work attachment and Faculty or Advisor Recommendation is no later than Midnight, February 1, 2020. Student will be notified of award no later than March 2, 2020.
Creative Writing Format Requirements & Submission Address
- Use Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx).
- Use Times New Roman 12-point font.
- Double space.
- Use one-inch margins for top, bottom and sides.
- Include a cover page with your name and, if appropriate, the title of the work.
- Include page numbers in the footer.
- Save your writing with the document title [Your last name] HWG scholarship entry. For example: Smith HWG scholarship entry
- Submit your creative writing as an attachment to your email application to education@hendersonwritersgroup.com
Criteria for Evaluation of Creative Writing
Content of the piece:
- Fiction forms include short story and vignette.
- A short story should include:
- An attention-grabbing beginning
- Logical plot development and tension build-up
- Clear conflict
- A satisfying resolution
- Clearly delineated major characters
- A vignette is a literary sketch that aims to create an impression or feeling. It is primarily descriptive and should feature elegant use of language and techniques of imagery such as metaphor and analogy.
- A short story should include:
- Non-Fiction forms include essay, memoir, and creative non-fiction.
- An essay should include:
- An attention-getting introduction
- Proper pacing
- Sufficient details and information that build to the point the author wants to make
- A point that is clear, even if inferred, but not preachy or overdone
- A satisfying conclusion
- Memoir and creative non-fiction rely on story-telling techniques and should follow the guidelines for short stories. Each form should also include:
- A broader point beyond the immediate story that addresses something universal or essential about the human experience
- An essay should include:
Mechanics: Writer uses proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and paragraphing.
